A vertiginous space battle is under way. The deadly trajectories of bullets and missiles streak the skies as futuristic aircraft are ambushed by an unknown enemy. While attempting evasive manoeuvres and trailing colourful plumes of smoke, vessels succumb to fiery mid-air conflagrations; hit, they careen nose first to the ground, shedding their metal carapace on impact, obscured in billowing black clouds.
The visceral narrative of All your base….(2010) is evoked through its forty-two individual sculptures, each piece acting as part of a dynamic whole, displayed and supported by sixty-five variously sized pedestals. The project embodies a loving sci-fi and high-tech influence – 80s alien-invasion flicks, the streamlined design of the Belgian Type 12 locomotive, the graphic styling’s of Moebius and Blake and Mortimer - with the title an infamous incidence of “Jenglish” from the 90s video-game Zero Wing.
Like fireworks set-off in an enclosed space and freeze-framed, All your base…is a contained riot of colour, dizzying movement and combustion suspended in space; vividly rendered through the interplay of the viewer’s senses, reason and imagination.
